David Hewlett is a Canadian actor best known in the role of Dr. Rodney McKay on the series Stargate Atlantis. He was born on April 18, 1968 in Redhill, Surrey, England and is the eldest of six children; he has five younger sisters. His sister, Kate Hewlett, played McKay's sister Jeannie Miller in several episodes of Stargate Atlantis.
Hewlett began acting in student films made by his high school classmate Vincenzo Natali , who later directed the films Cube, Cypher, and Nothing. He dropped out of highschool in his senior year to take up acting full time and devote time to his internet business Darkyl Media, a web site design company. His first few films were mainly low budget horror such as The Darkside and Pin. He also guest starred on episodes of Night Heat, Friday the 13th: The Series, and My Secret identity.
In the early nineties he had roles in the films Scanners II: The New Order, The First Circle and Blood Brothers. He also guest starred on Forever Knight, Street Legal and Kung Fu: The Legend Continues. In the late nineties he starred in several films including Cube, Clutch, and Survivor.
He later guest starred on ER, Mutant X, The District, and Without a Trace and played parts in Boa vs. Python, and Darklight. In 2002, he appeared in an episode of Stargate SG-1 playing the obnoxious but brilliant Dr. Rodney McKay. The role led to five more episodes on the series. In 2004 he became a series regular on the SG-1 spinoff Stargate Atlantis.
Hewlett made his directorial debut in A Dog's Breakfast, a film he also wrote and starred in with his sister Kate Hewlett and fellow Stargate actors Christopher Judge, Paul McGillion, and Rachel Luttrell.
David married Soo Garay on November 5, 2000. They divorced in 2004. He currently lives in Washington state with his girlfriend Jane Loughman.
