David Gerrold (January 24, 1944 Chicago, Illinois - ) is a Hugo and Nebula award winning American author who got his start by submitting an unsolicted story outline to Star Trek in 1966. Though his initial outline was rejected, he was invited in to pitch several other story premises, one of which led to the classic episode The Trouble with Tribbles.
Biography and Star Trek Work
Gerrold was born Jerrold David Friedman in Chicago, and moved with his family to Los Angeles. As a Theatre Arts major in college, he saw The Man Trap, the premiere episode of Star Trek on its first airing on September 8, 1966. Gerrold, an enthusiastic reader of Science Fiction, immediately sat down and composed a sixty-page outline, entitled Tomorrow was Yesterday. The tale involved the Enterprise happening upon the Voyager, a centuries lost "generation ship," only to discover that the inhabitants of the ship had forgotten the original mission of their ancestors.
Gene Coon rejected the outline as being too expensive to film, but did purchase an outline entitled "A Fuzzy Thing Happened To Me," which was retitled "The Trouble With Tribbles" during the writing of the teleplay. It was nominated for the 1968 Hugo Award for best filmed presentation, but lost to Harlan Ellison's The City on the Edge of Forever.
Gerrold did an uncredited rewrite on I, Mudd, and co-wrote the story for the third season episode, The Cloudminders.
