Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Carren started writing novels while still in elementary school. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, he moved to California to pursue a screenwriting career. His credits have ranged across every style of fantasy or SF material, including animation (Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles, GI Joe,) comic books (Twisted Tales, Alien Worlds,) and CD Rom (Wing Commander V.)
Carren was partnered with J. Larry Carroll on many television projects; they co-created the series Vor-Tech and were story consultants on shows like TekWar and Star Trek, the Next Generation. They co-wrote and produced "Alienated," an unusual episode of Diagnosis Murder that featured former SF TV stars George Takei, Walter Koenig, Grace Lee Whitney, and Majel Barrett.
Medallion Books published Carren's first SF novel "No Power on Earth," Stonelock Pictures optioned his second, "I've Killed Mother," and he adapted one of his short stories, "If She Dies," as an episode of The New Twilight Zone.
Carren is currently working in independent feature production. He was a co-producer and writer on the horror film Mr. Hell and played the part of V.C. In 2006, he wrote and directed the short Blue Tears, a romantic ghost story starring J. Eddie Peck (Kyle XY) for Casanova Island Entertainment. He has several SF and fantasy projects in preproduction, including My Monster at Quixote Entertainment and Black at 2D Pictures.
His next production will be The Red Queen, a feature film he'll write and direct for UTPA this summer in Edinburg, Texas. Harley Jane Kozak (Parenthood,) Estaphania LeBaron (The Alamo,) and Valente Rodriguez (The George Lopez Show) will star.
