Darren McGavin (May 7, 1922 San Joaquin, California – February 25, 2006) is an Emmy–nominated American actor who played reporter Carl Kolchak in the TV movies The Night Stalker (1971) and The Night Strangler (1972) as well as the short-lived series Kolchak: The Night Stalker (1974-75). His other credits include Mission Mars (1968), Something Evil (1972), The Martian Chronicles (1980), Hanger 18 (1980), Dead Heat (1988), Captain America (1990), and guest-spots on The X-Files.
McGavin studied dramatic arts at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse and the Actors studio. He made his film debut in 1945 in a small role in A Song to Remember. His breakthrough role was that of a drug pusher in the Man with the Golden Arm and he followed up with The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell. Though he appeared on television for several years in notable roles, he achieved minimal success in film and finally won recognition for his acting when he was nominated for an Emmy award for a guest performance on the sitcom Murphy Brown. He also won a CableACE award for his performance in the TV movie Clara.
McGavin died at 83 of natural causes on February 25, 2006.
