Darkfever is a 2006 paranormal romance novel by Karen Marie Moning. The novel is the first in her Fever series and is followed by Bloodfever and Faefever. All three novels center on the Tuatha dé Danaan the race commonly known as fairies. Though the novels concern the same powerful race of beings who appear in her Highlander series it goes into far more detail about the Tuatha de and their Seelie counterparts, the Unseelie. The story is told in the first person by MacKayla Lane and documents her transformation from carefree southern girl into a heroic sidhe-seer who must do her part to save the world.

Synopsis

Mackayla Lane's ordinary life is turned upside down when her sister is murdered and the only clue to what happened is a message on Mac's cell phone. The message refers to the Sinsar Dubh. In her search for her sister's killer, Mac travels to Dublin, Ireland and is drawn into the shadowy realm of the fae. She is immediately warned off by bookstore owner Jericho Barrons who is one among many with a deep interest in the Sinsar Dubh and despite immediate mistrust and antagonism between the two, they become allies in their search to find the powerful unseelie book, the Sinsar Dubh, a book so evil it corrupts all who touch it. Though resistant to the idea of becoming Barron's personal hunting dog thanks to her ability to see the Fae sense Fae objects of power her determination to avenge her sister's death pushes her to face her new reality. In the process, Mac discovers that her duty lies not only in stopping her sister's killer but the Unseelie horde taking over Dublin and destroying lives. She must also determine whether she can trust Jericho whose true agenda is a mystery and who is definitely more than he appears.
