Origins

The references to Dark Lords have grown over the years. Starting in the first stories passed down from generation to generation. Listing of the stories and general origins are as follows:

First Noted References

Circa 1600 BC

The ancient Sumerian stories refer to a being that lives primarily in Darkness drawing power from fear, hate, lust, and aggression. Weakened by light, Dark Lord(s) possess the ability to travel through darkness. Often appearing as shadows in most of the tales. These spirit creatures feed on the living, and prefer to attack small groups of humans or animals driving them mad with fear first then devouring the flesh of there still living victims.

Descriptions

Dark Lord(s) range from human looking in appearance with or without bat-like wings to misshapen winged creatures with long clawed hands. Most descriptions tell of glowing blue, black, or purple serpentine eyes. Additional descriptions also refer to these being wearing long black cloaks and making grinding noise similar to crunching bone.

Abilities

All known accountings of these being indicate that they use magic, and possess great intelligence.

  1. One of the well established examples of their power is that they can create small pockets of darkness varying in size from 100 feet up to 500 feet. The general appearance is of a large black cloud.
  2. It is also referenced in the accountings that they can drain the life from plants and people causing them to wither or age.
  3. Some stories also reference a blue fire that gives of cold heat and produce almost no light.

Circa 399 BC

It was at this time that a few stories from Central Africa began to surface about being called Dark Lord(s). Found primarily among the Red Fox (translated tribal name—actual tribe thought to be extinct) tribe. It was believed that these figures would drive animals mad and steal men’s souls.

Description

Tribal Stories depict Dark lords as human-looking in appearance, with batlike wings and long, clawed hands. Most descriptions tell of glowing blue, black, or purple serpentine eyes. Additional descriptions also refer to these being wearing long black cloaks of dead, blackened leaves and making grinding noise similar to crunching bone.
