Dante's Inferno is a 2007 comedy based on the classic novel by Dante Aligheri. Sean Meredith directs James Cromwell in the role of Virgil. The film is an updated version on Aligheri's work, and a dark satire filmed without CGI, instead depending on paper puppets and minatures to set the mood. The role of Dante is voiced by Dermot Mulroney. Dante awakens in an unfamiliar place and asks the first person he encounters, ancient Roman poet, Virgil (voiced by James Cromwell) for help. Unsure what to do, he follows Dante into Hell, a decaying urban setting, filled with familiar politicians, religious leaders and pop culture icons. The film made its debut at the Slamdance Film Festival but never received a theatrical release.
