Hannah Dakota Fanning (b. February 23, 1994) is an American child actress born in Conyers, Georgia to Stephen and Joy Fanning. She is the elder sister of actress Elle Fanning. Fanning began acting at age five. She appeared in a commercial with famed musician Ray Charles for the Georgia State Lottery and also appeared in ads for the laundry detergent, Tide. She he lent her voice to the Disney version of the Hayao Miyazaki animated feature, Tonari no Totoro/My Neighbor Totoro (1988).
Her first significant role was a guest appearance on the medical drama ER. She followed up with guest roles on Ally McBeal, Strong Medicine, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Practice, Spin City, Malcolm in the Middle, Family Guy and The Ellen Show. She gained significant notice when she appeared in the movie I Am Sam alongside Sean Penn and sister Elle. Her performance earned her a nomination for a Screen Actors Guild Award, the youngest actor to be nominated for the role, at age eight. She won the Best Young Actor award from the Broadcast Film Critics Association but was unable to reach the podium to accept the award without the help of Orlando Bloom.
Fanning's career bloomed and she appeared with Charlize Theron, Courtney Love and Stuart Townsend in the film Trapped, Sweet Home Alabama with Reese Witherspoon and Hansel and Gretel. Also in 2002, she took on the starring role of Allison Clarke in the miniseries Steven Spielberg Presents Taken. Younger sister Elle played the role of young Allison. She followed up with Uptown Girls with Brittany Murphy and starred in the live action film based on the works of Dr. Seuss, The Cat in the Hat.
in 2003, she lent her voice to Kim Possible: A Stitch in Time and in 2004 guest starred on Friends and voiced the role of Young Wonder Woman o Justice League. Also in 2004, she starred in Man on Fire holding her own alongside Denzel Washington. She continued to hold her own opposite A-list stars like Robert De Niro in Hife and Seek, and War of the Worlds alongside Tom Cruise. She also appeared in director Rodrigo García's Nine Lives and lent her voice to the Lilo & Stitch sequel, Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch.
2005 brought the film Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story in which she starred with Kurt Russell and a year later she played the role of Fern in Charlotte's Web. In 2006, she completed the film Hounddog. The film proved controversial as it included a scene in which her character was raped. Fanning emphasized to critics that it was a performance and she was not violated in any way.
Fanning's upcoming roles include Winged Creatures with Kate Beckinsale, the animated film Coraline, and The Secret Life of Bees based on the Sue Monk Kidd book.
