DNA resequencer

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

The DNA Resequencer, also known as the Genetic Manipulation Device, is a fictional technology used in the series Stargate SG-1. The technology was created by the Ancients to manipulate DNA, possibly for the purpose of evolving the body to a more advanced state. It has been theorized that this device was used to aid Ancients who were not able to Ascend through natural means. Other uses are also possible. The device can correct biological flaws.

The device was introduced in the episode "Metamorphosis." The Goa'uld Nirrti discovered the device and experimented on humans in an attempt to create a hok'taur, or advanced human, which she could use as a host. Nirrti's use of the machine proved devastating for those she experimented on. While some of her subjects gained telepathic abilities as well as telekinesis, they also developed terrible mutations. Several of her subjects died; though it's likely this was intentional on Nirrti's part, as she was able to set a self-destruct sequence in the human body that caused it to liquefy.

In the episode, Jonas Quinn's DNA is manipulated by Nirrti with no apparent ill effects. Some time later, in the episode "Prophecy," he develops precognitive abilities. Unfortunately, the abilities were linked to a benign but fast-growing tumor that had to be surgically removed to save his life.

Anubis] used a version of the Ancient device, with superior results due to his greater understanding of Ancient language and technology. Anubis created a Goa'uld-human hybrid called Khalek. Khalek had all the genetic memories of the Goa'uld and the human ability to Ascend to a higher plane of existence. Anubis used the device in stages, allowing Khalek's body to adjust to the changes. His goal was to advance Khalek's brain until it reached the necessary 90% activity mark required to Ascend.

SG-1 discovered Khalek in stasis, and he was accidentally awakened by Colonel Cameron Mitchell and brought to the SGC. Despite being sedated and placed under guard, Khalek's brain activity continued to grow ,as did his powers. He developed telekinesis and telepathy, and attempted to escape. He was killed before he was able to complete the process and Ascend.

The concept that increased brain activity can grant a person new abilities is based on the myth that humans only use 10% of their brains. Many presume that a human who is able to operate at full brain capacity would develop superhuman abilities and increased intelligence. It is widely accepted by scientists that this idea is false.
