In Stargate SG-1, crystal tunnels are used by the Tok'ra to set up their bases. The reason that they are called crystal tunnels is that certain crystals when placed create tunnels through rock, and the minerals in the ground. Specific crystals create tunnels of different sizes that vary in direction.
