The Dynamite Entertainment Highlander series takes place after the first movie and puts forth the notion that, while Connor Macleod did indeed defeat the Kurgan, he did not win the Immortal Game.

1986: Immortals Connor MacLeod, Tasya Desny, and Paul Furio are traveling via helicopter to Moscow with the mortal Dr. Arman Volkov in tow. Tasya says that she has an associate waiting for them, but Connor is more concerned with why her KGB superiors aren’t asking any questions. Tasya explains that she has been careful to keep control of the situation.

Connor and Volkov discuss their children, with Volkov referring to his daughter Ilyana in the past tense and Connor recounting how he saved his adopted daughter Rachel from Nazis during World War II. This triggers a flashback for Connor…

1963, New York: Connor takes Rachel to an airfield, where her boyfriend is waiting. They’re taking a trip to Europe together; Connor playfully tries to talk her out of going, but he later kisses her goodbye with a promise to stay out of trouble.

1986: In Moscow, a shadowy figure with a sword raids a KGB office, stealing a file marked TEMNOTIYE and decapitating several guards before a van arrives to extract him. The tattooed man from last issue is seen again as he takes the file from the soldier, revealing a map inside. The man says that the world will soon be reminded why they should fear the name of the Kurgan.

1963, Moscow: Dr. Arman Volkov meets with Prime Minister Khrushchev, who introduces him to a more civilized Kurgan than we saw in the first movie. The Kurgan will be accompanying Volkov to provide military training for a “special project” in Berlin. Volkov protests the location of the project, but the Kurgan assures him that security is not an issue. The Kurgan also insists that Volkov bring his wife and daughter to Berlin, a notion that quietly unsettles the doctor. He closes his eyes; when they open, he is onboard the helicopter in 1986.

As Paul announces their imminent arrival and his own unsettled feelings, Connor has a flashback of his own.

1963, New York: Connor is practicing sword forms when an older man arrives at his door. It’s Sergeant W.W. Hicks, who served with Connor during World War II. Connor tries to mask his identity, but Hicks is aware that Connor is not a normal human. After recalling a German grenade attack that Connor walked away from unscathed, Hicks asks Connor to covertly investigate a super-solider project in Berlin. Surprisingly, Connor accepts the mission.

1986: As the helicopter attempts to land, Tasya receives no reply from her contact. Before they can debate the point, Connor and his friends are blown out of the sky by super-soldiers, who hit the chopper with a ground-to-air missile. The immortals protect Volkov as the chopper crashes, only to find the sword-wielding soldiers waiting for them as they emerge from the wreckage. The leader of the soldiers tells Connor that he and his men are determined to deliver the wrath of the Kurgan upon the world, and a huge swordfight erupts.

The soldiers are forced to break off the battle for unknown reasons, fleeing in a van and leaving one of their fallen brethren behind. As the immortals and Dr. Volkov plan their next step, they find out why the super-soldiers fled so suddenly – the Russian military has arrived. Surrounded by troops, trucks and helicopters, the immortals are ordered to drop their weapons and surrender . . .
