Dynamite Entertainment’s “Classic” Battlestar Galactica series is set before the end of the 1970s television series, adding new adventures to the established continuity.

Stranded and left for dead on the planet Maytoria, Starbuck is rescued from Cylons by a woman named Stadra Ah Mun, the leader of the last of the Sagittarian forces that occupy the planet. After her soldiers dispatch the Cylon Centurion patrol, they offer to take Starbuck to their base, but only if he will remove the Cylon armor he stole last issue, as it contains a tracking device. Starbuck didn’t know this, and he turns on the charm to mask his embarrassment.

Starbuck accompanies them to their makeshift base in the basement of a trade center as Stadra recounts the plight of her people. The survivors of the Cylon attack are living in squalor, their supplies and resources dwindling. Stadra takes Starbuck to her ill father and announces that the warrior has come from the Galactica to oversee an evacuation of the Maytorian survivors. Her father lashes out and tells her that the Galactica has already left and there will be no rescue. When Stadra asks how he knows this, the old man points to a Colonial pilot, who is playing cards with some of the locals. It’s Boomer, alive and well after his crash-landing last issue.

Stadra is angry with Starbuck, who explains that he didn’t really have a chance to tell her that he wasn’t here to rescue them. Starbuck leaves her to fume as he reunites with Boomer, who recounts his own harrowing experience: He was indeed captured and tortured by the Cylons, but escaped thanks to the timely intervention of Stadra’s forces. As the two warriors examine their situation, they agree that Apollo must have believed them to be dead, as he would never leave them behind. If that’s the case, the Galactica must have followed procedure and departed the system already.

An eavesdropping Stadra interrupts, and the ensuing argument reveals that the Maytorian forces don’t realize how badly the Colonies have been hit. The Cylons control all communication frequencies on the planet, and the Maytorians simply assumed that the Colonial forces were still fighting the Cylons in force. Starbuck has to be the bearer of the bad news.

Onboard the Galactica, Apollo tucks Boxey into bed and reassures him that he will only leave if it’s necessary to the safety of Boxey and his mother. Once he’s alone with Serina, Apollo recounts a training exercise that left him stranded in the desert and believed dead by Starbuck. When Apollo was found alive, Starbuck, in an uncharacteristic display of emotion, made a mutual vow with Apollo to never mourn if the worst came to pass. Serina suggests that Apollo might need to break that promise for the sake of his own sanity, but Apollo explains that he can’t do that.

Back on Maytoria, Stadra rallies her fellow survivors—less than 200, in total—and suggests stealing a Cylon cargo ship in the hopes of reaching the Galactica. Opinion on the matter is split, with even Starbuck and Boomer agreeing that it’s a suicide mission. Stadra responds by saying that they’re going to die if they stay on the planet; she’d rather take the risk.

There’s no time for debate, though, because the Cylons have discovered the base and are mounting a large-scale assault. Starbuck and Boomer help cover the civilians’ escape, with Starbuck making a particularly brave run at the Cylons to cover his fellow warrior. After some timely assistance by Stadra, the two pilots make a hasty retreat with a wounded soldier in tow.

Unfortunately, their situation turns from hopeful to hopeless when the soldier notices a Cylon tracking device on Boomer’s jacket. Jamming his gun into Boomer’s face, the soldier accuses him of leading the Cylons to their secret headquarters . . .
