Dynamite Entertainment’s “Classic” Battlestar Galactica series is set before the end of the 1970s television series, adding new adventures to the established continuity.
The Council of Twelve alerts Commander Adama to the existence of a set of historical books on the planet Maytoria, a satellite planet to the Sagittaron colony. Set in the outer boundaries of the system, Maytoria was the planet hardest hit by the Cylon assault on the colonies and is still completely overrun by the mechanical tyrants.
Starbuck, Boomer, and Apollo (1978)Apollo are tasked with locating the books and retrieving them, if they still exist. Adama and the Council believe that these ancient texts may contain the location of the fabled Thirteenth Colony, a planet known as Earth. After their missions planning session and a brief farewell from Serina, Boxey, and Muffit, the three pilots set out in Viper fighters equipped with virtually untested (and potentially unreliable) stealth systems.
As the Vipers descend into the devastated planet’s atmosphere, the warriors are pleased to discover that their stealth-Vipers are working as planned, allowing them to fly right past Cylon Basestars and Raiders. While preparing to land, however, the invisibility of their ships becomes their undoing as Boomer’s Viper crosses a Raider’s flight path. As their fellow pilot makes a crash landing, Starbuck and Apollo find themselves in combat with the Cylons, who are targeting their thermal signatures. While preventing a Raider from shooting Apollo down, Starbuck takes a hit and his Viper crashes as well. Believing his friends to be dead, a distressed Apollo returns to the Galactica.
Down on the planet’s surface, Starbuck is alive. He sees the Cylons retrieving Boomer’s limp body from the wreckage of his ship and wonders to himself if his friend is dead; past experience tells him that if Boomer is still alive, he won’t be for long. Starbuck slips away to regroup, painfully extracting a piece of shrapnel from his leg and then cauterizing his own wound. Passing out from the pain, he wakes to find himself literally a few feet away from a Cylon Centurion patrol.
He successfully evades the Cylons after a brief skirmish, taking one fallen Centurion with him as he flees into another section of the ruined city. As he plans his next move, Starbuck scavenges what he can from the Centurion’s armor and supplies, and enjoys a trademark cigar.
Back on the Galactica, Adama and Colonel Tigh intend to depart the system, while Athena breaks down and Apollo argues for a rescue mission. Adama notes that the Cylons may believe that Starbuck and Boomer were simply members of Maytoria’s existing military forces, and if the Galactica and its convoy can escape free and clear, they should do so.
Meanwhile, a Cylon-armored Starbuck retrieves a communications unit from a downed Maytorian Viper but finds himself face-to-face with the Cylons. Outgunned and on the run, Starbuck’s outlook is bleak until an unexpected explosion puts some distance between him and his pursuers. When the smoke clears, Starbuck is greeted by a beautiful woman, clearly a member of the small band of humans who are now attacking the Cylon forces . . .
