Starbuck is onboard the mysterious Medivac 12 ship, which appears to populated by humans long believed to be dead, including CPO Dualla’s brother. Commander Adama asks Starbuck to verify the identity of the man standing before her, and she does: It’s Zak Adama, Starbuck’s late fiancé and Adama’s son. Reality sets in immediately, and Starbuck points her gun at Zak; she believes he’s a human-model Cylon. He claims that he remembers kissing her roughly two years ago, on the night before the flight accident that took his life . . . and then he woke up on this ship.
There are flashbacks of their relationship, and then Kara drops her defensive posture, embracing her long-lost love. Adama orders her back to the ship, and even Zak’s brother Apollo, flying escort to the Medivac, questions her logic. Zak shows Kara a scar on his hand and identifies the source of that wound. She tells Adama that Zak is the real thing.
On the Galactica, Gaeta reports to Adama that there are still five ships repairing their FTL drives after the coordinated sabotage from last issue. The damage is consistent on each ship, making the repairs somewhat easier. Gaeta is in the middle of saying that no one has claimed responsibility when another explosion rips through the hull of the Medivac ship. Zak and Kara find themselves in a firefight with Cylons while Dualla’s brother radios the Galactica for help. His sister verifies to Adama that she saw her brother’s body when he died, which is evidence enough for Adama to stand firm and offer no assistance to the ship.
Undaunted, the Medivac begins sending a wireless message throughout the fleet, transmitting the names of the passengers and requesting help. The Galactica cannot jam the signal, and people all over the fleet are hearing the plight of their lost loved ones. This spurs President Roslin into action.
As Adama continues to insist that this is all a Cylon plot, Roslin counters that the ancient Scriptures say that “the dead shall return in an ark of fire.” Even the agnostic Adama has a moment of pause, while the spiritual advisors in the fleet prepare for this prophecy to be revealed as truth.
On the Medivac ship, Kara is badly injured, leaving Zak as the only one with any pilot training. As the ship flies toward an abandoned tanker, Zak contacts Adama and tells him that he understands his father’s position, given the circumstances. He then bids him goodbye, while Apollo flies ahead, intending to destroy the tanker before the Medivac hits it. Adama tells him not to at first, but Zak’s words resonate in his father and the order is altered. Apollo flies ahead, clearing a path for the Medivac by destroying the tanker.
As fire suppression ships deal with the flaming hull of the Medivac, Adama orders the ship quarantined. Blood and tissue samples will be taken from each passenger and anyone attempting to leave the ship will be fired upon immediately. When Apollo returns to the Galactica, his father talks to him about Kara’s insubordination and his belief that the “Zak” on that ship is not what he appears to be. Alone in his office, Adama breaks down, overcome with grief.
We cut to the holding cell of Sharon Valerii, the cooperative human-model Cylon currently being held prisoner onboard Galactica. Adama, Apollo, and Dr. Baltar question Sharon about the Medivac passengers; she swears that she knows nothing and insists that they can’t be Cylons, as there are only 12 models. Baltar is visited by the Number Six Cylon that only he can see; she asks him why humans can’t recognize a miracle when they see it. Suddenly, the ship is rocked by what seems to be an explosion.
Another FTL drive has been sabotaged and terrorists are taking credit for it via video message. Claiming to be the Earth Protectorate, the masked me announce that they are going to cripple the fleet’s FTL capabilities because the humans are leading the Cylons to Earth, leaving the legendary planet open to the same conquest the Colonies suffered.
Meanwhile, Kara wakes in a hospital bed on the Medivac. Zak explains that the Galactica has quarantined them, but Adama’s requests for medical samples have been refused. They’re arguing the point when a boarding attack begins; Kara radios the Galactica, but Dualla insists that the boarding party isn’t one of theirs. The sick bay door is blown open by a shadowy figure.
Kara levels her gun at the figure, but Zak smacks it out of her hand and then kisses her passionately. He leaves her behind as he walks through the door, vowing to prove his identity to the woman he loves. She yells out as a blast door slides into place, locking her in the room.
Without warning, several zip-pods launch from the hull of the Medivac ship, hidden beneath the wreckage. Colonial Vipers fly in to intercept, but it’s too late; the pods have made their way into the fleet and are too close to civilian ships to risk firing on them. Apollo reports that they’ve tracked seven of them, all en route to their various family members in the fleet. Dualla’s brother Darrin has already been captured aboard the Galactica and placed in a decon cell.
As Adama and Apollo race to question Darrin, they find themselves face-to-face with a corridor full of Galactica crew and passengers, all of whom seem to be in the grip of a painful physical illness . . .
