Dynamite Entertainment’s Battlestar Galactica series is set during the continuity of the re-imagined SCI FI Channel series. The second issue of Zarek takes place in the wake of the first Cylon War. Excerpts from Tom Zarek’s book The Revolution Within provide narration as we learn that his home colony of Sagittaron is still a virtual slave state. Following the death of his parents, Zarek has grown to adulthood and developed a consuming hatred for the Colonial government.
Over the next few years, Zarek increases the profile of the labor union started by his mother and finds that the governmental resistance has escalated to deal with the situation. Eventually, a raid is staged on the group’s headquarters, leaving Tom and his associate Mason to start over with a handful of resources and loyal members. The rebirth of the organization opens the door to a more revolutionary approach and a new name: the SFM (Sagittaron Freedom Movement).
Following a successful raid on a Colonial weapons shipment, Tom becomes involved with Jessica Ward, an idealistic young SFM member. The SFM remains an underground organization for some time, attacking the Colonies in a way that polarizes public opinion and gains support from quiet and vocal corners alike. In time, Tom decides to publicly reveal his identity as the SFM’s leader. Eventually going too far with their arrogant actions, the organization suffers a major hit and many agents are apprehended, including Jessica.
She’s soon reunited with Tom and Mason, explaining that she talked her way out of the charges as per her training. She swears her loyalty to Tom, but we later find her reporting to an unknown source after Mason and Tom discuss details of an upcoming mission in front of her.
On the night of the operation in question, Tom and Mason take an unsuspecting Jessica out into the woods and her betrayal is revealed as a team of SFM agents approach the target and report that authorities are already in place. Jessica begs for mercy, but Tom has none; he shoots her dead and buries the body.
Tom and Mason return to Sagittaron City and summon the media to the Labor Ministry building. Sneaking in and appearing before the waiting crowd, Tom declares that he is taking action against the oppressive system. He then detonates a truck full of the same Nitrassium that his parents once mined for a living. The blast destroys the building and claims many innocent lives. Tom and Mason are apprehended and sentenced to prison terms, but Tom remains determined to see his revolution through, regardless of the setback.
