Cover-up

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

A cover-up is a deliberate attempt to obscure wrong-doing or non-public information by supressing the release of information and/or providing an alternative (and typically false) explanation for the known facts.

One of the most famous alleged cover-ups is the US Government covering-up information about UFOs. Conspiracy theorists suggest that the government knows more about UFOs than it chooses to reveal, and may provide false information (disinformation) to prevent the public from knowing it. This could be due to fear of public reaction, or, in a more sinister scenario, because it has entered into treaties that allow the aliens to abduct humans in exchange for high technology.

It has also been suggested that the government might encourage UFO reports to cover-up test flights of a secret aircraft.

An early element of UFO sightings were the reports of Men-in-Black. These were dark-suited individuals (who often claimed to represent goverment agencies) and discouraged people from reporting UFO reports as well as actually confiscating evidence. This was fictionalized (and shifted from the initial negative connotation) in the comic book and subsequent movies with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.
