Plot
SG-1 goes through the gate to the planet, Teal'c recognizes as Cartego, home to the Byrsa. Cartego is a planet often visited by the goa'uld in their search for hosts. SG-1 discovers signs of civilization but no one around. Everything appears to have been recently abandoned; there is even food still cooking. They enter the central building and are immediately surrounded by villagers brandishing crossbows.
They recognize Teal'c as Jaffa and one of the villagers accuses him of killing his father. Teal'c allows himself to be imprisoned for the crime. Jack questions Teal'c about the past incident and Teal'c admits to having killed many people under Apophis' command. He does not recall the man he's accused of killing.
The villagers insist Teal'c must undergo Cor-ai, a trial of sorts where the accuser decides the guilt and punishment for the prisoner. Jack and Daniel volunteer to be his defense. When the accuser, Hanno, recalls, for the court, the day of his father's death, Teal'c remembers and admits his guilt.
Daniel tries to convince the court that Teal'c is not the same man he used to be and although Teal'c was responsible for his wife, Sha're, becoming a goa'uld host, he now trusts him knowing that he has changed. He explains that what Teal'c did was the lesser of two evils. Teal'c was ordered, by Apophis to kill one of the villagers. Unable to refuse, he chose Hanno's father knowing that as he was crippled, he was unable to move as quickly as their others in their rush towards nearby caves to hide from the goa'uld. Without him, the group would be able to move faster and escape the goa'uld.
Despite Daniel's attempts, Teal'c is sentenced to death with the execution to be carried out the next day. Carter and O'Neill return to Earth, hoping to gather forces to free Teal'c through intimidation. They are denied by General Hammond and forced to return without help. On the day of his execution, the goa'uld come through the stargate and attack. Teal'c saves the villagers, including Hanno. In turn, Hanno grants him his freedom, admitting that Daniel was right. Teal'c was not the same man who killed his father.
