Contemporary fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy. Occasionally referred to as modern-day fantasy, contemporary fantasy works feature fantastic elements in a contemporary /current-day setting. Many fantasy works set in the "real world" often deal with fantasy creatures and magical elements as parts of reality hidden from most people. In some cases the fantastic elements that make their way into modern life come from alternate/parallel worlds where such things are the norm.

Contemporary fantasy has developed subgenres of its own, which include urban fantasy, which is narrowed to city environments that heavily influence the tone of the work. The genre also overlaps with crime and horror fiction.

Contemporary fantasy settings are popular in the paranormal romance genre, which often feature vampires, fairies, and werewolves in contemporary environs, and is readily distinguished in tone from horror.
