Constance Mary Towers (b. May 20, 1933 in Whitefish, Montana) is an American actress and singer. Towers grew up with aspirations of becoming an opera singer. She got her chance to be heard as a child singer on the radio. She later studied at the Julliard School of Music and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Her career turned away from opera and towards musical theater after being cast in a summer production of Carousel. She also performed in nightclubs while attempting to break into films. Towers made her film debut in 1955 in Bring Your Smile Along and made her Broadway debut in Anya in 1965 as Russian princess, Anastasia. She has appeared in notable stage productions such as The King and I, 42nd Street, Oklahoma! and Mame. Notable films include The Horse Soldiers, Shock Corridor and The Relic. Towers may be best known to younger audiences for her roles on the soap operas General Hospital as Helena Cassadine and Sunset Beach as Julianna. She has also appeared on The Young and the Restless as Audrey North and Perry Mason as Esther Metcalfe.
Towers has been honored for her work in theater by the New York Critic's Outer Circle, and The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She also won the Best Musical Actress of 1974 Award from the New Jersey Drama Critics Association.
Towers married actor John Gavin in 1974. Her family includes children Michael, Maureen, Crstina, and Maria and grandson Gavin. She is involved in charity most notably helping find homes for children in Mexico after the 1985 Earth Quake that devastated parts of the country. she has been a member of the Children’s Bureau of California, the National Health Foundation and The Red Cross and The Blue Ribbon of Los Angeles.
