PROFILE:

Murphy is a 30-something, Caucasian female, who lives alone and shares joint custody of her only child with her ex-husband. Using the Keirsey Temperament Sorter ([1]) we find that Murphy has a classic ENTJ personality, although her T – traits are occasionally over shadowed by her rather strong F – traits.

E is for Extroverted. We see this part of her personality displayed in nearly every episode. She has strong communication skills, and rarely misses an opportunity to assert herself. She can be viewed by others as being a force to be reckoned with because she cannot resist the urge to push, confront or demand immediate answers.

N is for Intuitive. Murphy trusts her own gut instincts above any rationalization that may contradict it. We can see this demonstrated most clearly in the episode What About Bob ( Season I ). Murphy must confront Dresden about the accusations that were made concerning his Uncle Justin’s death. Harry offers her platitudes in an attempt to satisfy her quickly and rush her out the door. She makes him understand that his behavior “doesn’t look right” to her. Ultimately, her decision to reopen the investigation of Justin Morningway’s death is made not upon the logical explanations that Dresden offers her but entirely upon her own gut instincts.

Intuitive personality types are often referred to as being empathetic people. They seem to just “know” what motivates another person. They are also known as Idealists. Idealist types search for their unique identity, hunger for deep and meaningful relationships, wish for a little romance each day, trust their intuitive feelings implicitly, aspire for profundity.

T is for Thinking (as opposed to an F for Feeling). Here Murphy is a bit of a contradiction. She is undoubtedly a T but she also harbors very powerful F – traits as well. We must conclude that her particular personality type straddles the border between these two traits.

In the episode What About Bob, Murphy explains to Dresden that she cannot accept the reality of his world (meaning the world of Black and White Magic) because her own world is scary enough. She tells him that she must have her rules because she needs them. This is a very typical statement from the T – type personality. People with T - traits keep their feet firmly on the ground and make sure that those under their supervision do the same, whether employee, subordinate, offspring, or spouse.

Although TJ personality types are tolerant of established procedures, they can and will abandon any procedure when it can be shown to be ineffective in accomplishing its goal. Murphy demonstrates this most clearly in the episode Second City ( Season I ). After expressing her admiration for the aggressive technique of a fellow cop named Munzer ( “… a real door kicker.”) Murphy risks a full review from her Captain by imitating Munzer’s door kicking style.

Murphy’s strong F – traits are displayed at the end of the episode What About Bob. After discovering that all evidence indicating that Justin Morningway was murdered has been eliminated, Murphy returns to Dresden with a peace offering; the photograph of young Dresden with his father. Murphy took a risk by pilfering it from the evidence file, but she must have been moved by the tears that sprang into Dresden eyes when he saw it. This shows us that, although she professes to need her rules, she is not above breaking those rules if she feels strongly enough about it. In this example, Murphy “followed her heart”.

We can easily see the strongest parts of Murphy’s J – traits in the episode Storm Front ( Season I ) . Dresden shows up at her home to ask her for background information on his suspect. We can see through the open door that Murphy’s home is very tidy and highly organized. This high level of organization is also seen in every episode that shows her cubicle at work. Her desk is neatly organized, and her papers are filed away. This is very typical behavior for the ENTJ. Their organizational and coordinating skills tends to be highly developed, which means that they are likely to be good at systematizing, ordering priorities, generalizing, summarizing, at marshalling evidence, and at demonstrating their ideas.

After this careful analysis of Constanza Murphy’s personality we can now make educated predictions about her future behaviors under certain circumstances.
