Clubs, by their nature, are a grassroots phenomenon, although some fall under an overarching organization, such as Starfleet International chapters. Within science fiction, clubs are ubiquitous and exist for a variety of topics and interests. Fan clubs can be organized around individual actors, television shows, authors, book series, subgenres such as anime, anthropomorphic fandom, and more.
The American Heritage dictionary defines one of the meanings of club as "A group of people organized for a common purpose or around a common interest, especially a group that meets regularly: a garden club."
Clubs are usually social organizations that bring people with common interests together for events or activities related to that interest. Traditionally, clubs are composed of people living close together, and meetings are gatherings of those people. The advent of the Internet has facilitated participation in clubs in which some or all of the club members attend meetings virtually.
