Cloverfield is a 2008 film produced by J. J. Abrams and directed by Matt Reeves. The script is written by Drew Goddard who worked with Abrams on Alias.

On January 18th in New York City, a monster attacks. The film is shot from the perspective of a hand-held video camera wielded by 20-something New Yorkers who are wishing their friend good luck on his trip to Japan when the attack begins.

The film's script, and premise were kept extremely secret even from actors who wished to be in the film. The film's cast is mainly relatively unknown actors including Lizzy Caplan and Michael Stahl-David. The film commenced shooting in June 2007 on what is assumed a small budget of approximately $30 million.

The film's trailer reveals a going away party at a New York bar where friends are wishing Rob good luck on his journey to Japan. A resounding roar is heard and everyone rushes down to the street where they witness explosions and fleeing pedestrians. A huge explosion is heard and the head of the statue of liberty rolls down the street like a bowling ball.
