Clive Owen

Clive Owen (b. October 3, 1964) is an acclaimed Oscar-nominated British actor born in Coventry, West Midlands, England. He is the fourth of five brothers raised by his mother and stepfather after his father left the family when Owen was three years-old. He attended the Binley Park Comprehensive School. He was attracted to acting early on and focused all his energy on youth theater which he joined at thirteen. Despite initial opposition to attending drama school, he was encouraged into an audition at Mountview College. He was accepted but turned down the opportunity.

After two years of little work, he altered his stance on drama school, applied to RADA and was accepted. He studied alongside Ralph Fiennes and Jane Horrocks. He graduated in 1987 and immediately went to work on stage appearing in Shakespeare plays at The Crucible and the Young Vic. While playing Romeo, he fell in love with Juliet, Sarah Jane Fenton, and they married. They had two daughters, Hannah and Eve.


Career

In the late '80s, Owen began appearing on television in Rockliffe's Babies and made his film debut in Vroom. Other early roles include the TV Movies Precious Bane and Lorna Doone. He gained recognition playing Derek Love in the series Chancer and won critical acclaim as Richard, a man in an incestuous relationship with his sister in Close My Eyes. Following the notorious performance, he returned to the stage appearing in George Bernard Shaw's The Philanderer.

He returned to the screen in 1993, working in the U.S. for the first time. He appeared in Century, Class of '61 and The Turnaround. In 1996, he appeared in The Rich Man's Wife with Halle Berry and followed up with a role as a gay man sent to a concentration camp in WWII in the film Bent. Other films include Croupier, The Echo and Second Sight. He made his genre debut in Privateer 2: The Darkening as Lev Arris.

In the early 21st century, Owen began to gain attention from U.S. audiences. He has appeared in Gosford Park, The Bourne Identity, Beyond Borders and King Arthur. He was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Closer with Julia Roberts and Natalie Portman and appeared in Frank Miller's Sin City, Derailed with Jennifer Aniston, a small uncredited role in The Pink Panther with Steve Martin and Inside Man with Denzel Washington and Jodi Foster. In 2006 he starred in the acclaimed dystopian film Children of Men as Theodore Faron, a man protecting the only pregnant woman on the planet. Upcoming roles include Shoot 'Em Up, The Golden Age, and Sin City 2.
