Claudia Black

A native of Sydney, Australia, Claudia Lee Black (October 11, 1972 –) had several years' acting experience in television to her credit before her appealing performances in the movie Pitch Black and in The Sci Fi Channel's original science fiction series Farscape won her a worldwide fan following.

In a 1997 telefilm/pilot titled Amazon High, Black played the Queen of the Amazons, a character who, according to Black, "was regal and butch at the same time. It was quite a combination. We were running around, in possum fur bikinis, screaming and beating up stuntmen."

Taking the role of Shazza in Pitch Black (2000) put Black in a time crunch, as she was still in the process of shooting the movie when Farscape reached its roll date. In an interview, Black said, "I'd never been so sleep-deprived in my life. I was very, very lucky, though, that the producers of Farscape were willing to accommodate me. I almost lost the part of Aeryn."

On Farscape, Black played Officer Aeryn Sun, once an elite soldier in the Peacekeeper corps, then trapped in exile aboard the ship Moya with a mixed bag of a crew, including Earth astronaut John Crichton, played by Ben Browder. Crichton became Aeryn's sometime love interest and eventually the father of her unborn child. The series reached an untimely end after four seasons, as did the characters, who were disintegrated by an alien beam weapon. Black was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Actress for her role in the series.

The fan outcry at Farscape's cancellation was placated with another installment of the show. In 2004, Black reprised her role as Aeryn Sun in the miniseries Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars.

Black's science fiction career continued with a recurring role as Vala Mal Doran in Stargate SG-1's ninth season, alongside former Farscape flame Ben Browder, who found a berth in the show's permanent cast. Black did the same in Season 10, bringing a sassy charm to the venerable show.
