Before the crash
Claire was born to Carole Littleton and Dr. Christian Shephard, also father of Jack Shephard. Neither Claire nor Jack are aware of their relationship to each other. Claire had an argument with her mother and they had a major accident while Claire was driving. Claire broke her arm but her mother was severely injured, suffering a brain hemorrhage that left her in a coma and dependent on life support. Christian Sheppard visited her in the hospital and paid for the bills. He introduced himself as Claire's father and tried to convince her to take her mother off life support. Claire rejected the idea particularly as it came from someone whose name she didn't even know.
Claire later became pregnant, and her boyfriend, Thomas abandoned her despite his initial thoughts that being parents would be great for them. She decided to give the baby up for adoption. A friend, Rachel brought her to astrologist, Malkin, who insisted the baby's life was in danger if she did not raise it herself. Malkin later assured her that giving the baby to a couple in Los Angeles would be the best choice.

It's usually best to give a very general overview to a story first, then plot details. When including the plot or essential details in your article (which could ruin the pleasure of discovery for some readers), it is important to include the spoiler tag before any give-away material.
