Christopher Eccleston

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

Highly respected British character actor Christopher Eccleston (born February 16, 1964) is perhaps best known to genre fans for two television roles. He played the 9th incarnation of the Doctor on the British sci-fi program Doctor Who and has appeared as Claude, the invisible man, on several episodes of NBC's Heroes.

Early Life

Eccleston was born in Salford, England. His upbringing has been described as both "happy" and "working class." He nourished loves of both television and soccer. But, by age 19, he had decided that he was a more talented actor than a soccer player. Subsequently, he enrolled at the Central School of Speech and Drama.

Film Career

Eccleston has compiled an impressive resume of feature films, including roles in eXistenZ (1999), Gone in 60 Seconds (2000), The Others (2001), Elizabeth and 28 Days Later (2002).

The Ninth Doctor

In 2005, Eccleston became the first actor to play the title role in the revival of the BBC's venerable program Doctor Who. Series writer/producer Russell T. Davies has indicated that Eccleston was always at the top of his list for the part, but that he didn't think he could get an actor of Eccleston's stature. when the actor (who happened to be an old friend) e-mailed him to ask to be placed in consideration for the role, Davies quickly leaped at the chance to hire him.

Eccleston's portrayal of the Doctor brought a brooding edge that the role had only very rarely exhibited before. Moreover, he shed the character's past patrician leanings to portray a distinctly working class time traveler. The role would earn him a Favorite Actor nod at the British National Television Awards.

Nevertheless, he is the shortest-lived incarnation (barring Paul McGann's portrayal in the television movie), lasting one season of 13 episodes. So far, the actor has refused to comment publicly on his reasons for leaving the role.
