Christian Charles Philip Bale (b. January 30, 1974) is a British actor born in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales. He is best known to genre fans from the film Equilibrium and in the role of Batman in the film Batman Begins. He will reprise the role in the 2008 sequel The Dark Knight.

Career

Bale was raised in England, Portugal, and the U.S. which likely contributed to his excellent ability to mimic accents and truly become the characters he plays. His father, David Bale, was a commercial pilot and his mother was a dancer in the circus. He began acting on stage and at age ten, appeared in + The Nerd opposite British actor Rowan Atkinson. He made his television debut in 1986 as Alexi in the miniseries Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna.

In 1987, on the recommendation of his Anastasia co-star Amy Irving, he won a lead role in the Steven Spielberg drama Empire of the Sun. He played Jamie Graham, a young boy living in a Japanese prison camp in World War II. His performance won him critical acclaim "Best Performance by a Juvenile Actor". Other early roles included Henry V', Treasure Island and the musical Newsies.

Bale transitioned from child to adult roles with ease. He appeared in the 1999 film A Midsummer Night's Dream and starred as Patrick Bateman, a murderous yuppie in American Psycho. The film earned mixed reviews, but once again Bale's performance was noteworthy. In 2000 he appeared in Shaft opposite Samuel L. Jackson playing another villain. He changed direction for his next role in Captain Corelli's Mandolin, in which he played a Greek fisherman competing with a character played by Nicholas Cage for the affections of a woman, Pelagia.

Bale's first significant genre appearance came in 2002's Reign of Fire. He starred alongside Matthew McConaughey. The film was not a success. He followed up with the scifi film Equilibrium. The film garnered only a limited release but gained a cult following.

In 2004, Bale exhibited true devotion to his art, dropping sixty pounds from his frame to play the skeletal, insomniac Trevor Reznik in The Machinist. He followed up with a far less taxing voice role in the English version of the Hayao Miyazaki film Howl's Moving Castle. Bale finally achieved blockbuster success in Batman Begins. He previously auditioned for roles in the franchise but lost the part of Robin in Batman Forever to Chris O'Donnell. The new film refreshed the franchise and won critical and fan approval.

Following Batman, Bale appeared in the historical drama, The New World the crime drama Harsh Times, the war drama Rescue Dawn and starred in The Prestige in 2006 . Upcoming roles include 3:10 to Yuma and The Dark Knight

Personal Life

On January 29, 2000, Bale married Sibi Blazic. They have one daughter. Bale has three older sisters and many members of his family are also involved in the entertainment industry.
