Chile <span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span> Chile, (Republic of Chile) is a country on the west coast of South America. The country occupies a narrow but long strip between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. It is bordered on the north by Peru and Bolivia and Argentina to the east. In addition to the mainland, Chile also includes the Juan Fernández Islands, the Sala y Gómez islands, the Desventuradas Islands and Easter Island. The country's capital, and largest city is Santiago located in the center of the country. Like most of South America, Chileans speak Spanish having been occupied and claimed for Spain in the 17th century. Chile declared its independence in 1810 but it wasn't officially achieved until 1818 after a war with neighbors Peru and Bolivia. Chile's film industry is small but growing. In the 21st century, Chile began outputting films in the double digits, after years of limited releases. In 2006, Chile was one of seven nations selected for the second edition of the Canne Film Festival's World Cinema section.
