Chi McBride (b. September 23, 1961, Chicago, Illinois) is an American actor named after his Chicago hometown. Originally intending a career in music, McBride studied music and instruments and performed in gospel choirs. Hehad his first taste of success with the song parody "He's the Champ" which mocked the marriage of boxer Mike Tyson and and actress Robin Givens. The success led to him being signed by Esquire Records and he joined the R&B band, Covert.
McBride's interest turned to acting and he moved to Los Angeles where he landed guest appearances on The Fresh Prince of Belair and appeared in the movies Revenge of the Nerds III: The Next Generation, The Distinguished Gentleman and the Tina Turner biopic What's Love Got to Do with It. He made his genre debut with the TV movie Cosmic Slop in (1994) and followed up with a role as Cyrus alongisde Michael J. Fox in The Frighteners.
McBride may be best remembered for his role on the Fox High School drama series Boston Public as commanding principal, Steven Harper. He also appeared in the short-lived series Killer Instinct and The Nine. Other notable roles include Undercover Brother, The Terminal, I, Robot, a recurring role on House M. D., Ultimate Avengers II, and The Brothers Solomon.
In 2007, McBride took on the role of Emerson Cod, a private investigator on the ABC fantasy series Pushing Daisies.
