Charlton Heston (October 4, 1924 Evanston, Illinois - April 5, 2008) was an American actor.
A lot of jokes have been made about Charlton Heston playing Moses (in The Ten Commandments (1956 movie). Those jokes, though, were not about the inappropriateness of actor best-known to that point for appearing in a circus movie (albeit, a highly-respected one) playing a dynamic leader, but how well the role seemed to fit him. Just like humor about Lon Chaney paid tribute to his ability to change his appearance ("Don't step on it, it may be Lon Chaney"), people would kid about Charlton Heston parting the Red Sea.
Ben Hur would bring him a Best Actor Oscar, and he would have mainstream success in as a variety of outsize personalities, from Marc Antony to Cardinal Richelieu to Michelangelo.
Genre fans also count him as a scifilebrity. He often stood against overwhelming odds: as The Omega Man, a lone survivor against a society of monsters (in a role also played by Vincent Price and Will Smith); as a whistleblower against a repressive society in Soylent Green; and maybe most famously as the lone speaking human on The Planet of the Apes.
In the 1980s, he conquered primetime TV as Jason Colby in Dynasty and its spin-off, The Colbys.
Later in his career, he proved he could have fun with his image in roles on Friends and in Wayne World's 2]'.
His dramatic delivery could be heard in his voicework in movies like Disney's Hercules and Armageddon.
Even in his 70s, Heston continue his genre work. He appeared in the new version of The Outer Limits in 2000, voiced a mastiff in Cats & Dogs, and had a notable cameo in Tim Burton's remake of Planet of the Apes.
