Charlize Theron <span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>  Charlize Theron (b. August 7, 1975) is an Academy Award- winning South African actress born in Benoni, Guateng, to German mother, Gerda, and French father, Charles. Theron grew on a farm in Benoni and studied ballet as a child. At 16 she lost her father, shot by her mother in defense against his drunken abuse. Shortly after, Charlize moved Milan to pursue a career in modeling. She was drawn back to dancing however and moved to New York to dance with the Joffrey Ballet. Her career was cut short by a knee injury and she was encouraged by her mother to move to Los Angeles and pursue a career in acting. Theron got lucky in Los Angeles when an agent witnessed her arguing with a bank manager who refused to cash her check. A few months later, she got her first acting job. She made her film debut in Children of the Corn III in a minor role and gained moderate notice in 2 Days in the Valley. But it was her performance in The Devil's Advocate opposite Keanu Reeves that launched her successful career. She followed up with Trial and Error and Mighty Joe Young. Theron went on to star in several notable films, including The Astronaut's Wife alongside Johnny Depp, The Cider House Rules with Tobey Maguire, Men of Honor with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Al Pacino, Sweet November, Woody Allen's The Curse of the Jade Scorpion and The Italian Job. In 2003, she gained weight to star as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. Her transformation from A-list beauty into the dark character wowed critics and earned her an Academy Award. She followed up her Oscar performance with the multiple award-nominated film, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers and North Country, a fictional story based on the first significant successful sexual harassment case in the United States. Her performance earned her another Academy Award nomination. Her follow-up role in the film Æon Flux was panned by critics. Other roles include guest appearances on Arrested Development and Robot Chicken and the films Ferris Wheel, In the Valley of Elah, and Battle in Seattle. She is slated to appear in The Hurt Locker, The Ice at the Bottom of the World, Tonight, He Comes, Jinx and The Brazilian Job.
