Spoiler Warning: Plot details and/or information about the ending follow. If you wish to enjoy the work first, stop reading here and return at another time.

Charlie Jade is a private detective who discovers a plot by mega-corporation Vexcor Technologies to steal water from an alternate universe to make itself wealthier and more powerful. Charlie lives and works in Cape City, a place in Alphaverse. Alpha is an overly crowded, dirty, police-state "Orwellian/Blade Runner" universe that has been devastated by corporate greed and environmental damage. Gammaverse, a pretty, lush, and vibrant place has lots of resources and is peaceful. Betaverse is like our own universe "one half-hour from now", where Charlie ends up being transported to after an experimental reactor is blown up by terrorists, including Reena, from Gammaverse. Charlie slowly realizes the plot by Vexcor to steal water from Gamma to bring to Alpha.

Character Bio

Charlie Jade grew up in an orphanage but escaped into the streets sometime before his fourteenth birthday. He was recruited by the elite branch of the state police force, a paramilitary style law enforcement agency. Charlie fought for the system, believed in it, unquestioningly upholding the ideals of the state, where giant corporations had taken the place of government. Society had decided that war was bad for business - too expensive and wasteful. The poor were the problem in this ultra-capitalist world. They were vermin that had to be contained, controlled and exploited.

When an illegal strike broke out, Charlie was 23 years old. His unit was ordered in to make a brutal example of the C3 workers to deter others. He watched his comrades aim and fire their rifles. Looking into the eyes of the desperate men and women, Charlie, for the first time in his life, refused to obey an order. In the cold light of day, he swore that he would never again be a follower. He would operate outside the system. He went back to the streets, back to a world he knew well, back to the city he grew up in, and became a private detective. A very rare independent contractor in a highly organized corporate world that discourages individuality. For once in his life, he took control and stopped being a follower.

Charlie specializes in finding MISPERS - missing persons, and he is good at his job. He has built connections all over the city including the security forces. Although he resides somewhere that has been depleted of all natural resources - a hard cruel place - Charlie manages to lead a good life with his beautiful companion Jasmine.

Like everyone else in his universe and ours, Charlie believes the Big Lie - parallel universes and trans-universal travel are the stuff of science fiction. When the audience meets him for the first time, they travel with him in his world and see him struggle with his "visions" - strange hallucinations of places and things which the doctors cannot explain. The audience witnesses his misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. After an explosion at a suspicious Vexcor Corporation facility, Charlie finds himself in a desert with barely the clothes on his back. He doesn't know where he is or what has happened.

Without a logical explanation, Charlie retraces his steps from just the day before, and finds that he has become invisible - there, but not really there - with no more job, no loft apartment, no beautiful girlfriend and no identity. He is in a city that looks like his Cape City but is anything but. In this Cape Town he has no identity at all.

As his panic and desperation rise in his throat he realizes he is living the same nightmare that the dead girl in the morgue suffered from, and his first order of business is survival. His second is to find a way to get back home, back to the life and all the things he left behind.
