Kawalsky is a US Air Force officer recruited by General West for Earth's first mission through the Stargate to the planet Abydos. He was second-in command to Colonel Jack O'Neill. Together, they helped kill the evil alien Ra and free the people of Abydos. When he returned to Earth, he and fellow officer Louis Ferretti joined with O'Neill in keeping silent about not having fulfilled their mission objective to destroy Abydos.

In the series opener "Children of the Gods", Kawalsky, Ferretti, and O'Neill were called back to Stargate Command when aliens came through the gate and attacked the SGC. They were forced to admit they hadn't destroyed the planet. They were sent through the gate once again to Abydos to uncover the source of the alien attack. While on Abydos, they came under attack by aliens and several Abydonians were taken through the stargate. Despite injuries received during the attack, Ferretti was able to see the address of the planet the aliens went to.

Kawalsky was put in charge of SG-2 and along with SG1 they visted the planet Chulak where SG-1 was imprisoned by Apophis. They managed to escape but just before returning to Earth through the gate, Kawalsky became infested by a goa'uld symbiote. The young symbiote could not gain full control of Kawalsky and he suffered several blackouts. Surgery was attempted to remove the parasite and at first appeared to be successful. It soon became apparent that the goa'uld still controlled him and he attempted to leave through the stargate. Teal'c was able to stop him and Kawalsky was killed when the wormhole connection was severed while his head was still inside.

Kawalsky appeared in three more episodes after his death. He was a character in a virtual reality simulation of O'Neill's past in " The Gamekeeper". He visted from an alternate reality in "Point of View" and appeared in an alternate timeline in "Moebius, Part 2".
