Cattle Mutilations involve the alteration of animal corpses by an unknown agency.
Overview
A rancher stumbles across the body of one his prized cattle:
- Funny, the cow was in good health and seemed fine yesterday.
- Still, cows die. Hmm. That's weird. There should be tracks.
- No tracks. No people tracks, no coyote tracks, no vehicle tracks . . . not even any cow tracks. How'd the cow get here?
- Blood. Or rather, no blood. Cow's missing an ear. Belly looks okay, but there's definitely something wrong farther back. Should be blood around.
- Never seen anything like that before. The wound's a perfect circle, and some of her innards are gone!
- What could have done that?
In the 1970s, scenes like this were played out across the United States. The situation got so bad (and the economic losses significant enough) that a federal investigation was conducted.
Theories in the public included UFOs, Satanic cultists, and covert government testing, perhaps of biological weapons.
Conventional explanations suggested normal predation and scavenging.
