UFO is an acronym for Unidentified Flying Object, a formal designation applied originally by the United States Air Force to any object either sighted by a pilot or detected by radar, which did not fit any known description of an existing aircraft.

What UFO has become over time is an umbrella designation for a wide range of related phenomena involving all sorts of events that seem to involve technology and effects that can't be explained with current technical knowledge.

Despite the number of conspiracy theories created by UFO sightings, approximately 90% of them are easily explained as being experimental air craft, air planes, rare weather phenomena, or other optical illusions. The planet Venus is often mistaken for being a UFO because it is so bright. Even geese have been the cause of more than one reported UFO sighting.
