Podcasts refer to Internet-distributed audio or recordings, usually in the format of a radio show, though now encompassing show commentary and other extensions of existing media- established and grass roots- in form of audio files. The "Pod" in "Podcast" derives from Apple Computer's successful portable digital media player, the iPod. Adam Curry is credited with jump-starting this channel, pioneering a way for users to subscribe to podcasts via an RSS-type client that automatically downloaded the next available podcast file for a particular channel to either a user's PC or directly to their media player.

Fancasts have expanded dramatically since the birth of podcasting, making many voices and interests in all sorts of genres available to the world.
