Franchises refers to properties in the science fiction, horror, fantasy and related genres which are issued in multiple product forms through a licensing arrangement between the owner of the property(-ies) rights and one or more manufacturer to whom these rights are assigned. A media franchise is, thus, an expansion of a single creative work beyond its original medium, such as a movie tie-in novel, toy or game.

The term is not, however, synonymous with sequels, spin-offs, or multiple entries in a series, especially within the same medium, when these are all produced by the original property rights owner.
