The classic series of Doctor Who began airing in November of 1963. Essentially a cliffhanger show, its stories stretched for several episodes. In this format, it lasted for 26 seasons before being put on "hiatus" at the end of 1989.
A made for TV movie continued the Doctor's adventures in 1996.
A new series had its debut in 2005. Although some multi-part stories remained, most stories were now self contained in single episodes. The BBC restarted the numbering of the seasons for this new series. However, most fans prefer to continue the season numbering from the classic series (beginning at 27) to avoid confusion.
