Castrovalva is the four episode serial that opened Season 19 of the long-running program Doctor Who. The serial introduced the Doctor's fifth incarnation (played by Peter Davison). Its first episode premiered in Britain on January 4, 1982.
Synopsis
Immediately following the events in "Logopolis," Tegan, Nyssa, and Adric help a very weak Doctor back inside the TARDIS. Confused and extremely frail after his recent regeneration, the Doctor retreats to the Zero Room, a sort of isolation tank deep inside the TARDIS's maze of rooms and passageways.
He briefly emerges to respond to an emergency, but when events transpire that cause the Zero Room to be jettisoned, the Doctor ends up in dire need of someplace peaceful to rest and recover.
Concerned for the Doctor's health, Tegan and Nyssa search the TARDIS data banks for a suitably peaceful location to take him. Deciding that a place known as Castrovalva sounds suitably restful, they attempt to set the TARDIS coordinates and, surprisingly, seem to be successful. The TARDIS does indeed materialize outside of a town known as Castrovalva. But there may be more to this town than meets the eye . . .
Trivia
The exterior of the hilltop town of Castrovalva was inspired by the M.C. Escher illustration of the same name. Its interiors are clearly inspired by other Escher works.
