Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (b. September 27, 1950, Tokyo, Japan) is an American actor born to a US army officer and a Japanese actress. the family moved several times in Tagawa's youth, traveling to wherever his father was stationed. They finally settled in California where Tagawa attended high school. He attended the University of Southern California and became an exchange student in Japan. Tagawa is a skilled martial artist and teaches the skill. He portrayed Shang Tsung in the Mortal Kombat Live Tour.
Tagawa has appeared in a number of genre roles beginning with a guest appearance on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He may also be remembered for appearances on Space Rangers as Zylyn, Nash Bridges as A. J. Shimamura, and the films Elektra as Roshi, Snow Falling on Cedars as Zenhichi Miyamoto and Planet of the Apes
