Carole Landis

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

Carole Landis (b. Frances Lillian Mary Ridste January 1, 1919, Fairchild, Wisconsin) — July 5, 1948, Pacific Palisades, California) was an American actress of Norwegian and Polish descent. She was raised by her mother with two siblings, a brother and a sister after her father left the family. She married at fifteen to Irving Wheeler but the marriage was quickly annulled. The later remarried in 1934 and the coupled moved to California.

Carole began her career in entertainment as a singer and dancer and landed a studio contract with Warner Brothers, appearing mainly in small uncredited roles in such films as A Star is Born, A Day at the Races and The Emperor's Candlesticks. In 1940 she appeared in her breakout film, One Million B.C. as the skimpily dressed Loana. Her good looks drew attention and helped move her career along. In 1942 she appeared in several films, Manila Calling, The Powers Girl and Wintertime. Her contract was sold to 20th Century Fox and she was cast in I Wake Up Screaming. Her appearance was praised by critics.

She tried her hand at writing with a book about her time entertaining the troops in England and North Africa on her first USO Tour. Her career began to fade in the mid 40s. Her contract with 20th century Fox was canceled and she suffered through ill health and failed marriages. Her final films were A Scandal in Paris, It Shouldn't Happen to a Dog, Out of the Blue, Noose and Brass Monkey. Landis committed suicide on July 5, 1948 at her home in Bentwood Heights.
