Carl Sagan (b. November 9, 1934 – December 20, 1996) is an American astronomer, astrobiologist, author and educator known for popularizing science through various documentaries, magazine, and newspaper articles. He is particularly well known for his work on the PBS series Cosmos, an educational program focusing on astronomy that became the most watched series in the history of public television. Sagan published over 600 scientific papers and is the author, co-author and editor of over twenty books.
Sagan was born in Brooklyn, New York to Sam Sagan and Rachel Molly Gruber. He attended Rahway High School in New Jersey and later attended the University of Chicago where he received his bachelors degree and a masters degree in physics as well as a doctorate in astronomy and astrophysics.
