Carl Lumbly (August 14, 1952) is an American actor from Minnesota known for his role on the short-lived series M.A.N.T.I.S. and the ABC series, Alias. Lumbly was born to Jamaican immigrants and his father instilled an appreciation for literature. He graduated from South High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota and went on to attend Malcester College in St. Paul from which he graduated with a degree in English. After college, he began a career as a journalist working for the Associated Press. He also did freelance work for periodicals and magazines. His work as a journalist led him to the Dudley Riggs' Brave New Workshop Comedy Theatre. He auditioned and landed a spot in the cast.
He later moved to San Francisco to continue his journalism career but was drawn to an ad searching for actors for a South African play. Lumbly landed the role opposite then unknown Danny Glover. He appeared with Glover in Athol Fugard's Sizwe Bansi is Dead and The Island. He eventually signed an agent in Los Angeles before moving to New York where he landed his first significant on screen role on the TV series Cagney & Lacey.
Lumbly has appeared in several scifi series and films including guest appearances on The X-Files, seaQuest DSV, and voice roles on Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond and Justice League.
