Captain America is a fictional superhero character owned by Marvel Comics.

A true living legend, Captain America fought Nazis during World War II, and then survived to fight against the modern villains of today. He was an early member of The Avengers, an organization with which his name would become synonymous. Cap trained most of Avengers in unarmed combat, and has led an inspired the team on many occasions.

He has worked with Nick Fury and his ex-girlfriend Agent Sharon Carter on numerous missions for S.H.I.E.L.D., the anti-terrorism and espionage organization. He has partnered with young Rick Jones as the new Bucky, as well as Sam Wilson as the high flying Falcon.

He has battled many foes, including the terrorist organizations such as Hydra and A.I.M.. He has clashed with numerous super-powered villains, including many ideological villains such as the Hate-Monger and Flag-Smasher. His arch nemesis is the evil Nazi, the Red Skull, trained personally by Adolph Hitler, and surviving today through suspended animation, as Cap did himself.

Cap was an inspiration to all who knew him, and the most admired and trusted of all superheroes. Even cynical anti-heroes like Wolverine and the Punisher admired him. All seem to recognize that Captain America is the living embodiment of America's best and most heroic values.

Abilities

Cap is a perfect physical specimen with incredible combat fighting skills. He is not greedy abou sharing these abilities, and has trained most of the Avengers in combat skills, particularly those dependent on specific powers and weapons. Often, Avengers in a jam, unable to depend on their usual techniques, find they can fight their way out because of skills taught to them by Captain America. He has a round shield with amazing properties. The Shield is almost impossible to destroy or penetrate, and returns to its owner when thrown (in the manner of a boomerang). As such, it operates as both an offensive and defensive weapon.

Character Origin

Skinny weakling Steve Rogers was a 4F student at the outset of World War II. Wanting to find a way to serve his country, he volunteered for a top-secret experiment where he was given the Super Soldier Serum. The serum worked, transforming Steve into the perfect physical soldier. When the scientist/inventor of the serum is killed by a Nazi spy, it is soon clear that Steve will be the only "Super-Soldier" the U.S. will have. He was given the identity and patriotic costume of Captain America to battle Nazis and inspire the troops.

After using a triangular shield for a while, he was given a round shield of mysterious origin and amazing indestructable and boomerang-like properties. Some say his shield contains an alloy of adamantium and vibranium, though the truth about its nature and origin may be lost to history.

Early in his career, army mascot and war orphan Bucky Barnes walks in on Private Steve Rogers changing from his Captain America uniform. Bucky can't believe his friend Steve is the great hero. Cap ends up getting him his own costume and he takes him in as a partner and sidekick.

Captain America and Bucky fight all sorts of Nazi villains, often accompanying the troops on dangerous campaigns. They eventually team up with the Sub-Mariner and the original Human Torch to create the team The Invaders. They later work with other costumed heroes, become part of other teams like the All-Winners Squad. They also continue on solo missons.

Towards the end of the war, Cap and Bucky race to stop an airplane drone packed with explosives and aimed at London by Baron Zemo. Both heroes grab hold of the plane as it takes off and struggle to sabotage it. After rigging it to explode early, Cap bails out over the cold ocean. Bucky, however, can't remove his hand from the mechanism, and appears to die as the plane explodes. Cap plunges into the cold ocean.

Captain America and his shield are frozen in ice moments after Bucky's death. Found by superhero team the Avengers (Marvel Comics), Cap awakens from suspended animation into the modern world. Here, in a strange new time, Captain America still fights for the values inherent in the American Dream.

Civil War

In the crossover series Civil War, a disaster with the superhero team New Warriors while battling the villain Nitro in Stamford, Connecticut causes the death of hundreds. The public to demands that costumed vigilantes be brought under control and held accountable. Congress passes the Superhuman Registration Act (SHRA), which requires all meta-humans to register with the federal government, reveal their secret identities, and be licensed by and accountable to a federal agency.

Despite the assurances that identities would be kept secret, many heroes balk at this, and refuse to submit. This law makes these heroes criminals, and splits the superhero community right down the middle. It puts the licensed heroes in a position of having to arrest the unlicensed heroes. Leading the pro-act camp is Cap's old ally from the Avengers, Iron Man. Captain America leads the anti-act camp, and refuses to register, giving courage to many other heroes to do the same. This leads to a big war between superhumans, one that causes the death of Bill Foster, a well-liked hero called Black Goliath.

It all culminates in a big battle, which gets very violent and out of hand. Captain America decides to surrender himself to end the violence. While in custody, an agent of the Red Skull assasinates Cap, and he is pronounced dead. The world mourns him.

Is Captain America really gone?

The New Captain America

The Barnes Captain America. Note the fire arm.

Bucky Barnes, Caps old teen sidekick from World War II, thought dead for decades, was found to be alive after all. He was picked up by a Russian Sub after falling into the ocean, missing an arm and most of his memories. He was programmed as a ruthless assassin and given a bionic arm, and functioned for years as a Russian Agent, code named Winter Soldier. Kept in stasis between missions, he has only aged a few years since WW II. His memory restored, for the moment, he has taken up the mantle of Captain America. With a very different background and psychological scars than the original, Bucky now takes on the big role in the Captain America comic book. How will the new Cap be different than the original? Will he be a success or a tragic failure? Stay tuned.

This version of the character is a bit different, as it is based on "The Ultimates" which is part of a special line of Marvel Comics which present a more modern and (slightly) more realistic view of the traditional Marvel super-heroes and their history.

The captain was also featured in a 1944 film serial, Return of Captain America starring Dick Purcell in the title role.

In 1990, a Captain America was released, telling the tale of the hero's creation and how he came to be frozen in ice and resurrected in the current day to continue his fight against Red Skull. Albert Pyun directed Matt Salinger in the title role while Scott Paulin took on the role of Red Skull.

In 2009, a new Captain America film is slated to be released, telling the story of Captain America from the beginning.
