History

Cameron Mitchell is an Air Force Pilot. He led a squadron of F-302s in the battle over Antarctica in "Lost City, Part 2." He was severely injured during the battle while protecting SG-1 and was not expected to recover enough to return to duty. He underwent significant physical therapy and overcame his injuries, determined to return to duty. Mitchell was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery and, as a result of his heroic mission, he was offered his choice of assignments. Mitchell chose to join SG-1 and was granted command of the unit. Unfortunately, SG-1 had disbanded and he was left to choose a team of his own.

Mitchell was gravely disappointed. He had wanted to joining the existing team and work with Lt. Col Samantha Carter, Teal'c, and Daniel Jackson. After a series of interviews, Mitchell was unwilling to choose a new team from the available candidates. After some convincing, and a series of successful missions, he managed to lure the former members of SG-1 back to their jobs.

Life and Career

Mitchell was very close to his father and has great memories of the time spent together watching the launch of Columbia space shuttle. His father was a military test pilot before an accident resulted in the amputation of both his legs when Mitchell was about ten years old. Mitchell appears to have inherited a positive outlook and strength from his father. Despite the amputation of both legs, his father never let his situation get him down, and Mitchell never let his father see that the situation scared him.

Mitchell has also made several references to a sage grandmother, and it is apparent that he grew up in the south with religious family members. He also has a younger brother with whom he fought broomstick battles.

Like Carter, Mitchell was determined to get into the space program. As a cadet, he swore an oath with close friend Bryce "Fergie" Ferguson that they would get into the program or die trying. They both trained at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Mitchell carries the weight of several innocent deaths on his conscience. During a mission, while flying his F-16, he was ordered to destroy an enemy target. After requesting mission confirmation, he was told to go ahead. Mitchell destroyed the target but several seconds later was ordered to abort. It was too late and the target was already destroyed. He was informed later that the target was likely a band of refugees.

After the incident, Mitchell considered leaving the Air Force but, under his father's counsel, decided against it. Mitchell's father did not believe Mitchell was cut out for a simple life as an airline pilot. Mitchell doubted his strength to continue, but his father reassured him of his strength and eventually proved to be right.

SG-1

While recuperating from his injuries, Mitchell read all of SG-1's mission reports. He became very excited about becoming a part of SG-1, only to discover that it was a team of one. The SGC had a new commander, General Hank Landry, and the former members of SG-1 were all occupied with new tasks. Carter was working at Area 51, Teal'c was participating in the formation of the Free Jaffa government, and Daniel Jackson was preparing for a trip to Atlantis.

When Vala Mal Doran visited the SGC with an |Ancient tablet and tales of lost treasure on Earth, Mitchell had his first opportunity to go on a mission. Vala bound Daniel to her with a pair of Kor mak bracelets, preventing him from being separated from her by long distances. As a result, he was unable to go to Atlantis. Mitchell proposed that they investigate Vala's story, and the information on the tablet, and called upon Carter and Teal'c to join them. He convinced Teal'c to join them, but Carter was unable to leave her current assignment.

Mitchell dropped several obvious hints to his temporary teammates, indicating that he would like to get SG-1 back together. It took some time, but the team eventually re-formed in "Ex Deus Machina" to hunt down Baal on Earth.

As the new and inexperienced member of SG-1, Mitchell tends to get very excited about their missions. Despite the newness of it all, he has managed to garner some of the quintessential gate-traveler experiences on his missions. He became involved with an alien woman in "Collateral Damage" and became infected with a plague caused by a Prior in "The Fourth Horseman, Part 1." In "Babylon," he was injured and taken prisoner by the Sodan. They helped him recover, and trained him to fight in order to defend himself in a battle to the death (a punishment for killing one of their warriors).

Memorable Quotes and Expressions

"All right, boys and girls."

"Good morning, sunshine."

"That's what I'm talkin' about!"

"Yo!"

Prior: We are beacons on the road to enlightenment.

Mitchell: No, you're Dark Side intergalactic encyclopedia salesmen. Unfortunately, the home office hasn't been quite up-front with you.

Daniel: Nice work on the metaphor.

Mitchell: Thank you.

Mitchell: It's a Norwegian cheese, I think. Spelled with a G or a J, maybe both. Jgetost, Gjetost, something like that. So then what you do is you dice up the cheese, you toss it in with egg whites, then you chop up some avocado, throw it all together . . . whoa, daddy! You've got yourself a wicked omelet. . . .

Mitchell: General! We were just exchanging recipes.

Hank Landry: I heard. Has he offered up anything?

Cameron Mitchell: No, sir. The man doesn't even have a decent pie crust.
