CBS (Columbia Broadcasting System) is one of America's largest television networks and formerly one of its largest radio networks. CBS is one of the three big networks (the other two being ABC and NBC) and a pioneer in radio and television. CBS was formerly a holding of media conglomerate Viacom before they split in 2005. It is now owned by the CBS Corporation currently under the control of Sumner Redstone.
The network originated in 1927 as United Independent Broadcasters and established by Arthur Judson. It was bought and renamed Columbia Phonographic Broadcasting System and began airing radio programming on September 18, 1927 from Newark, New Jersey.
CBS is infamous for having aired the Orson Wells dramatization of the H.G. Wells novel The War of the Worlds.
The network began experimental television broadcasts in the late 1930's. It received its FCC television license on July 1, 1941. The network was largely shutdown during the years of World War II and resumed regular broadcast in 1946.
