Breath and Bone is a 2007 fantasy novel by Carol Berg. The novel centers on the character of Valen a pureblood member of the Cartamandua family whose magical talents lie in mapping. Valen is addicted to the magical narcotic duolon, that can transform pain into pleasure and his enemies have learned of his weakness. Unfortunately for Valen, his enemies are many.

Among his foes are Gildas once a friend, the monk abducted his friend Julian. There's also Sila Diaglou, the female leader of the Harrowers who seeks to reduce mankind to animals by eliminating civilization and knowledge. The Danae, elflike beings from a parallel dimension known as Aeginea, hat Valen because of a long ago act committed by his grandfather. Osriel, the illegitimate son of the now dead king, seeks control of the kingdom and fights against his brothers for control using dark magics.

Despite his numerous enemies, Valen may be the key to saving the worlds Navaronne and Aegina.
