Brandon James Routh (b. October 9, 1979) is an American actor from Des Moines, Iowa, best known for playing Superman in the 2006 film Superman Returns. Routh is the third of four children born to Ron and Katie Routh. He grew up in Norwalk, Iowa and graduated from Norwalk High School. He attended the University of Iowa where he studied writing and appeared on stage in productions at the Norwalk Theater of Performing Arts.

Despite that more recognized actors such as Nicolas Cage and Josh Hartnett were considered for the role, it was Routh who was ultimately chosen by director Bryan Singer to take on the role of Superman. Routh's resemblance to the comic book hero and slight resemblance to Christopher Reeve helped him land the role. Routh will also appear in the Superman sequel, tentatively titled Man of Steel. The film is slated for a 2009 release. Other upcoming roles include the horror film Dead of Night, the crime thriller The Informers, Lie to Me a romance also featuring wife, Courtney Ford and Life Is Hot in Cracktown costarring Shannyn Sossamon and Kerry Washington.
