The Bram Stoker Awards for Superior Achievement, named in honor of Bram Stoker, author of the seminal horror novel Dracula, have been given annually since 1988 by members of the Horror Writers Association. Members include the HWA's first president and noted author, Dean Koontz.
The awards do not attempt to define a best in category but instead award "for superior achievement". The awards are are non-juried and any work of Horror first published in the English language may be considered for a Stoker during the first year of its publication. Two rounds of voting by active members of the HWA determine the finalists and then the winners. The Awards are presented at a banquet, typically in June, during the HWA's annual conference.
The Stoker trophy is a fanciful "haunted house" designed by Steven Kirk.
