Blade Runner was a 1982 motion picture based on the 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. This film was directed by Ridley Scott, who also directed Alien. It features a soundtrack by Vangelis, and performances by Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Daryl Hannah, Sean Young, William Sanderson, Joanna Cassidy, Brion James, and Edward James Olmos.

Spoiler Warning: Plot details and/or information about the ending follow. If you wish to enjoy the work first, stop reading here and return at another time.

Ford plays Rick Deckard, a police department bounty hunter on the trail of a group of escaped androids, called replicants, who are at large in the Los Angeles of 2019 A.D. Replicants are slave-labor androids used on off-world colonies. Use of replicants is prohibited on Earth. When a replicant is discovered on Earth, a bounty hunter called a blade runner is dispatched to kill the escaped android. This is called "retirement."

This film is noted mostly for its special effects and grim look at the future. There are, however, major philosophical issues addressed in it. The escapees Deckard pursues are an upgraded model, forcing Deckard to confront his humanity and evaluate what it means to be human. Deckard is a replicant.

Follow Ups

There have been several cuts of the movie. December 18, 2007 is the release date for an update on DVD, entitled Blade Runner: The Final Cut. One edition of the release contains five different versions of the movie.
